Yin yoga

Yin yoga is a slow form of yoga where the asanas (poses) are held for several minutes. It originated in China and focuses on improving the flow of qi through the body. It is quite a meditative form of yoga and aims to cultivate awareness of the inner silence. For beginners, asanas may be held from 45 seconds to two minutes; more advanced practitioners may stay in one asana for five minutes or more. The sequences of postures are meant to stimulate the channels of the subtle body known as meridians in Chinese medicine and as nadis in Hatha yoga. In Yin Yoga, we hold mostly passive poses for about two to five minutes to work into our connective tissues. The more we work our fascial system and deep tissues, the less dense and tight our bodies become as we age. Movement and stretching hydrate fascia and literally help slow the aging process.

Yoga is incredible for an older population to help them maintain their balance, keep their joints flexible, maintain bone health and muscle mass, as well as learn how to cope with their mental state as they witness their bodies aging. Yoga is great for focus, concentration, and emotional wellbeing. Anyone is welcome to attend this class but it is a class where older people can feel confident to come and along and learn / practice yoga in a supportive environment.

Yoga is beneficial to kids in many ways because children encounter emotional, social, and physical challenges or conflicts, a dedicated and intentional Yoga practice that includes breathing techniques, behavioral guidelines, and physical postures can be incredibly valuable for them. Yoga is something that the children can practice anywhere and that the breathing, the concentration, the poses, and the way kids learn to act or react to situations, will lead to constant self- discovery and inquisitiveness. If we started teaching meditation to our younger generations, would it prevent fighting and bullying, would drop-outs dwindle in numbers? Would it maybe give them a head- start to provide them with the necessary life tools for a more peaceful, successful life.
